THE LANDSCAPING...

OF BLOCK 317, RACKENFORD DRIVE, GINGIN.

The block is 1.1 hectares - just shy of 3 acres - and is a gently sloping block on the lower slopes of a shallow valley. The valley is on the outer fringes of Gingin town (a village really), within a strolling distance of downtown. (see pics of Gingin in my photo galleries on pbase.com.) and the block has delightful views of vineyards, pasture land, and rolling hills. The soil is sandy but has been productive farmland in a former life, the lower section of the block is better in terms of soil quality, so it is in the upper corner where we have decided to locate the house. The views are also the best from this position.

The plans for the landscaping have taken a while to formulate, and are  'a work in progress'. This page and the accompanying pics will be like a sort of diary for this development. A reference for me as well as an opportunity to show my work !!

The landscaping plan involves the inclusion of 'native' vegetation, fruit tree areas, a sala (for sunset drinks), an oriental garden at the north end of the property ( bottom of the slope). The whole site will be linked by pathways, and there will be a dry creek bed running from the pond down to the oriental garden. It may not be so dry in stormy weather!  Around the house will be a more manicured look, with the emphasis on 'dry spell' landscaping, an 'inner fence' (for the dogs) ... and dog proof plants!   Of course there will be a substantial area for my veggie patches, and vines...all contributing to "The good life".

Pre-landscaping as the earthworks begin

Developing the veggie beds ...  leveling the compost - hence the presence of too many flies!!

Not landscaping but some of my first batch of veggies!

The earthworks have been levelled off ... the 'scaping takes shape.

Dig it up again! the first pathway takes shape.

The pond is dug out, with the 'dry creek bed' beyond.

pathways now compacted

The winter has arrived ..... now so green. (that is so odd to me!)

The wildflowers create a dazzling spring display.

The creek bed begins 'to take shape'

Commentary only - pics to come. Work has started on the pond, border trees are in, a tropical garden has been set in front of the house. (do have pics of that) Rocks for the creek bed have been delivered, and the bougainvilleas are going great.

The girls on the new lawn with the tropical garden of the future behind them.

The new deck and tropical stuff.

A noted absence of new photos for sometime - I will remedy this within the next few days (August 2010)
